Snow ice and crushed ice from one disc
The „Santos“ #09 is a traditional lever-operated ice crusher, also known as an ice shaver. It comes with one adjustable disc, which turns ice cubes into fine snow ice or crushed ice depending on how its knife is set. The motor is rated at 600 W.
The ice crusher is made for bars, restaurants, fishmongers and caterers. Its sturdy body is cast aluminium and stainless steel, and the disc is driven by a commercial induction motor.
The motor stops whenever you raise the lever or pull out the drawer. All mechanical parts are earthed, and every ice crusher is tested at the factory after assembly.
Disc, lever and drawer
Ice cubes go into the feed chute, and the sturdy, ergonomic lever presses them onto the spinning disc. The disc fits onto the motor shaft and turns with it at 1,500 rpm on a 50 Hz supply. The disc carries an adjustable knife: moving the knife changes the cutting height — how far the knife bites into each ice cube — so the same disc gives either snow ice or crushed ice.
The ice drops into a pull-out drawer that holds 800 g. The drawer is made from shockproof, BPA-free plastic, and a stainless steel plate goes in the bottom. Materials in contact with food comply with Regulations (EC) No 1935/2004 and (EU) No 10/2011.
The housing with the feed chute and lever lifts off quickly, as does the disc, so the ice crusher is easy to clean. A locking key holds the housing in place and doubles as the tool for undoing and tightening the disc screw.
Using the ice crusher
Before first use, wash the drawer and the disc thoroughly. Have the ice cubes ready before you start.
Place the stainless steel plate in the drawer and slide the drawer onto its runners; the ice crusher only works when the drawer is correctly in place. Always switch on first (position 1), and only then raise the lever, put ice cubes into the feed chute and press the lever down steadily without forcing it. Repeat as often as you need, and turn the switch to 0 when you have finished.
Adjusting the knife and removing the disc
Unplug the ice crusher before adjusting the knife. To reach the disc, press the end of the lever, pull out the locking key and lift off the housing with the feed chute and lever.
The knife is held on its support by two screws. Loosen them, move the knife to raise or lower the cutting height, then tighten both screws firmly again.
The disc screw has a left-hand thread: hold the disc and undo the screw clockwise with the locking key. Before refitting the disc, check that the shaft key is on the motor shaft and the seal is on the disc. Fit the disc so that the shaft key engages the keyway, then hold the disc and tighten the screw anticlockwise.
Duty cycle and safety
The ice crusher is designed for intermittent use: 15 minutes on, 5 minutes off (EN 60335-2-64). It is not intended for continuous high-volume production.
The machine will only start with the drawer correctly in place on its runners and the lever no more than 2 cm out of the feed chute. Pulling out the drawer switches the ice crusher off; once the drawer is back in, switch the ice crusher on again (position 1). Raising the lever stops the motor only, and the motor restarts when the lever is lowered. If the power fails, the switch returns to 0.
If the motor jams — on a foreign object, on something too hard or because the lever is pressed too hard — the switch trips to 0 automatically. Clear the cause and turn the switch back to 1. If the problem persists, unplug the machine and call a service technician or an approved „Santos“ dealer. The motor is also protected by an internal thermal cut-out.
The on/off switch is waterproof. Measured 1 m from the machine, the noise level is 71 dB(A).
Cleaning and care
Before cleaning, turn the switch to 0 and unplug the ice crusher. Then lift off the housing with the feed chute and lever, and remove the disc.
Wash the housing, disc and drawer with washing-up liquid, rinse, dry and reassemble the machine. According to the manufacturer's leaflet, all removable parts are also dishwasher-safe.
Wipe the body with a damp sponge and dry it, and polish it now and then with a non-abrasive glass or metal cleaner. Never immerse the body in water, and never clean the ice crusher with a water jet or pressure washer.
The ice crusher needs no routine maintenance, as the bearings are lubricated for life. The disc with its knife counts as a wear part. Also check that the lip of the disc seal shows no signs of tearing. After a long period out of use, clean the machine and check the power cord, seals and other parts before using it again.
Spare parts are ordered by the manufacturer's part numbers: crushing disc — 09201, drawer — 09502, locking key — 09126. Part numbers for everything else are in the spare parts diagram on the ‘Technical Data Sheet’ tab. When ordering, give the model, serial number and electrical data from the rating plate on the underside of the machine. Use genuine „Santos“ parts only.
Dimensions and electrical connection
The ice crusher is 250 mm wide, 420 mm deep and 350 mm high, and weighs 14.7 kg. Stand it on a worktop or bar counter sloping no more than 10°, with all its feet resting on the surface. Do not use it outdoors or place it on or near a source of heat.
The 600 W ice crusher connects to a single-phase 220–240 V supply. The machine plugs into a standard earthed socket (2-pole + earth), so no hard-wiring is needed; the socket circuit must be protected by a residual current device (RCD) and a 16 A fuse. Earthing is compulsory, and no other appliance should be plugged into the same socket.
Before plugging in, check that your mains voltage matches the voltage on the rating plate. Never use the ice crusher with a damaged power cord — have the cord replaced by an approved „Santos“ dealer, by „Santos“ itself or by a similarly qualified person. The ice crusher is for professional use only.
