„Puly Grind Crystals“ — burr cleaning crystals in single-dose sachets

Starch crystals that clean the burrs of coffee grinders and superautomatic coffee machines without dismantling. 10 × 15 g sachets per box.

„Puly Grind Crystals“ are crystals for cleaning coffee grinder burrs, made in Italy by „Asachimici“. They are ground just like coffee beans, so there is no need to dismantle the grinder or change the grind setting. Used regularly, they keep coffee oil deposits and rancid or mouldy grounds from building up on the burrs and in the grinding chamber. The pack states that they are suitable for flat and conical burrs. One sachet is one cleaning dose.

The crystals are made of natural gluten-free starch (80–90 %) and water (10–20 %); according to the manufacturer, they contain no allergenic substances. They also clear the grinder of the previous coffee — for example chocolate- or vanilla-flavoured coffee, or caffeinated coffee before you switch to decaf. The manufacturer states that any traces of the crystals do not spoil the aroma or crema of the espresso and are not harmful to people with coeliac disease or diabetes.

Directions for use

Dosage. One sachet (15 g) per cleaning; two sachets for retail grinders.

Coffee grinder:

1. Empty the bean hopper; on a grinder-doser, also empty the ground coffee from the doser.
2. Pour the contents of the sachet directly onto the burrs.
3. Refill the hopper with beans.
4. Run the grinder for 3–5 seconds so that all the crystals grind through.
5. Grind and discard the first two doses of coffee (about 10 g).

Superautomatic coffee machine:

1. Empty the bean hopper as far as possible.
2. Pour the contents of the sachet into the hopper and refill it with beans.
3. Without changing the grind setting, make two coffees and discard them.
4. Then use the machine as normal.

The manufacturer recommends cleaning the burrs every evening or at least once a week, ideally on your closing day; its website says every 24–36 hours.

After cleaning, check the ground coffee: the grind should be even, with no unusual odour or mould. Repeat the cleaning if necessary; if the grind stays uneven, the burrs may need replacing. The bean hopper and doser should also be clean — the manufacturer recommends removing oily residues from the hopper with a 1 % solution of „Puly Caff“ powder.

Warning: never put fingers, brushes or other objects into the burrs while the grinder is running. The manufacturer’s safety data sheet does not classify the crystals as hazardous; even so, avoid breathing in dust, and if dust is generated, wear tight-fitting safety goggles and a dust mask. If in eyes: remove contact lenses and rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 10 minutes, holding the eyelids open; if discomfort persists, see an eye specialist. Keep out of reach of children. The product contains no preservatives. Store the pack tightly closed in a dry, cool, ventilated room, away from heat sources and sunlight; do not store above 20 °C.
