„Coffee Clean“ — coffee machine cleaning powder

„Coffee Clean“ is a specialist detergent for coffee machines, made in Italy by „REPA“. It is used to backflush espresso machine group heads with a blind filter, and as a soaking solution for filters, portafilters, cups and saucers. The powder has a strong degreasing and emulsifying action on vegetable fats, coffee oils included, and releases active oxygen in solution. It therefore cleans group head parts thoroughly and lifts grease and coffee stains from cups and saucers.

It contains sodium carbonate, sodium triphosphate and sodium percarbonate (15–20 % each), sodium metasilicate (5–10 %) and an anionic surfactant, sodium alkylbenzenesulfonate (3–5 %). The product is a white powder that dissolves readily in water; a 1 % solution has a pH of 11.3, so it is strongly alkaline. According to the manufacturer, the solution rinses off easily and leaves no residue on the cleaned parts.

Applications

• Espresso machine group heads — backflushed with a blind filter.
• Filters and portafilters — soaked in the solution.
• Cups and saucers with grease and coffee stains.

Directions for use

Dosage. To clean the group head, put one teaspoon of powder in the blind filter; for soaking, dissolve one tablespoon of powder in 1 litre of water.

Group head cleaning:

1. Put a teaspoon of powder into the blind filter and lock the portafilter into the group head.
2. Start the brew as if making coffee and stop it after about 10 seconds.
3. Wait 10–20 seconds and start the brew again. Repeat until the discharged water runs clear.
4. Remove the portafilter, swap the blind filter for the normal one, and rinse the group head and portafilter thoroughly with water.

Soaking filters, portafilters, cups and saucers. In a stainless steel container, make up a solution of one tablespoon of powder per litre of water and immerse the items. Wear rubber gloves and avoid splashing the solution. Leave the items to soak for 10–20 minutes, until they are clean, then rinse them thoroughly with water. Do not soak aluminium, zinc or tin items: the manufacturer's safety data sheet states that sodium metasilicate solutions corrode these metals and their alloys.

If your espresso machine's instructions specify a different group head cleaning procedure, follow them.

Warning: causes serious eye irritation (H319). Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and eye or face protection, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling. If in eyes: rinse cautiously with water for several minutes; remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do, and continue rinsing. If eye irritation persists, get medical advice. Do not mix with other products, especially acids such as descalers — the sodium metasilicate it contains reacts violently with acids. Do not transfer the powder to another container — it could be mistaken for food. Store only in the original, tightly closed pack in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from heat and sources of ignition.
